Winter can wreak havoc on your electricity and gas bills. Although we would all like to blast the heat in our house all day, most of us can’t afford it or don’t have working heating units at all. That doesn’t mean you have to choose between freezing and not having enough money for food. Try these cheap and easy home heating tricks to keep cozy without the hefty cost.

Use A Space Heater
If you and your family are only in one room, use a space heater. They use much less energy and will cost you less than turning the heat on for the whole house.

Use The Curtains
When the sun is out, open the curtains to let it naturally heat your home. Close them when the sun goes down to lock the heat in.

Reverse The Direction Of Your Ceiling Fan
There is a switch on every ceiling fan that allows you to change the direction that it spins. By reversing the direction, your fan will push warm air down, heating your home.

Install A Programmable Thermostat
These units cost as little as $20 and can save you lots of money. By being able to program the temperature for when you are home or away, you can save energy while you’re not home without having to turn it all the way off.

Use The Oven
After cooking or baking, open the oven to let the heat out into the house. It will mostly heat the kitchen, but can make for a cozy dinnertime.

For extra warmth, wear warm, cozy clothes and make sure your home doesn’t have any holes that cold air can get into. Don’t let a limited budget keep you from staying warm this winter. Fighting off the cold is easier and less expensive than you think.
